Welfare
Upon arrival each horse is checked by a Farrier, Equine Dentist and Equine Therapist to highlight any problems present, receives treatment for worms and a Vet is called if necessary, this costs approximately £100 per animal. Any treatment needed is carried out by the appropriate professional, sometimes this can be ongoing if any problems are detected. Our priority in these cases is to ensure there is no suffering on the part of the animal, so treatment can be lengthy, all of which adds to our running costs.
Majority of animals coming in to us will be rehomed at some stage. Again our priority is the welfare of the animal, so homes are very carefully visited and vetted for compatability for each particular horse. Some are rideable and will be rehomed as such. Others will be rehomed as companions only.
Horses are rehomed on a loan basis, and each horse will go out with an agreement tailor made for it's needs. Although we'd like to say that a loan will be for life, sadly sometimes it doesnt work out that way and horses will be returned to us for a variety of reasons.
We will never sell or sign over ownership of any horse or pony*, so if the loan fails, the animal will immediately return to us.
We are also available to offer help and advice to owners if they are unsure of anything or just need some general information. Part of our aim is to help educate horse owners, and we can provide literature and guidance as part of our service. This all comes under the umbrella of Welfare, and is just as important a part of our work as the ponies we take in.
*certain exceptions on the grounds of welfare and wellbeing apply.
